How to host the perfect game night

Hosting a game night can be a fun and memorable way to bring friends and family together. You’re probably already an expert at hosting great game nights, but just in case there’s something you haven’t tried, we’ve compiled some tips on making your game nights even more epic!

Let’s start with the Game Selection

You can’t have a game night without games. It’s important to have a variety of games available to cater to different interests and group sizes.

Include a mix of classic board games, card games, party games, and even video games if applicable. (Who can deny that a good, old-fashioned N64 party of Smash Bros is fun?)

We recommend keeping things interesting. Trying new games will unlock new waves of fun for your group that you never knew existed. Everyone knows Catan and Monopoly, but have you heard of Splendor or Brändi Dog?

Next comes the atmosphere

This one is super important. Create a comfortable environment. If it’s hot or cold, or if people are not enjoying themselves, it won’t matter if you have the best flipping game present.

Arrange comfortable seating with enough space for everyone to sit and play comfortably.

Ensure there is adequate lighting for the game area, making it easy for everyone to see the game components.

Prepare a selection of snacks, finger foods, and beverages that are easy to eat while playing games. Feel free to ask for every guest to bring one thing. This will invite all others to participate. Also, depending on your guests, provide both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options.

Play some good background music that complements the mood of the games.

If you are wanting to go all-out, Consider decorating the space with game-related decorations or themed elements.

Become the Game Master

Familiarize yourself with the rules of each game beforehand, so you can clearly explain them to your guests. It’s always a buzz kill when it takes 30 minutes to figure out what the rules to the game are. Be ready to give demonstrations or provide cheat sheets if needed, especially for games that are new to everyone.

Another good thing to do is to start with a warm-up game. These should be short and uncomplicated. It sets the mood and allows everyone a smooth transition into a longer, more complex endeavor like Mau.

Mix and Rotate

If you have a big group, encourage mixing and rotating players between different games to allow everyone to interact and engage with each other. This will give everyone a chance to play different games and socialize with different people throughout the night.

Or better yet, have games ready that involve everyone to play like Bunco! Or have an elimination bracket to play short games that eventually lead to a final!

Have Backup Plans

Have a few backup games in mind in case some games don't resonate with the group or finish quickly.

Be flexible and open to suggestions from your guests if they have specific games they would like to play.

Why not even ask your friends to bring over a game that they would like to play?

BONUS: Enjoy and Have Fun!

Remember that the primary goal of the game night is to have fun and enjoy the company of your friends and family.

Be a gracious host, encourage laughter, and create a positive and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy.

Introduce a competitive element to make the game night more exciting.

To make the night absolutely epic, raise the stakes and bring in a prize. At the end of the game reward the winner with an Epic Foundries trophy! Take advantage of the trophy’s record keeping if it’s a recurring competition.

By following these tips, you can create a game night experience that will keep your guests entertained and looking forward to the next time you get together!
